About Student

The Student is the University of Edinburgh’s original student newspaper. The Student is a weekly and independent publication compiled and distributed by students at the University of Edinburgh.
It is the UK’s oldest student newspaper, founded in 1887 by Robert Louis Stevenson.

In 2006 and 2007, The Student was awarded the title of Best Student Newspaper in Scotland by the Herald Student Press Awards. Last year, our Sport Editor, Martin Domin, won Best Sports Writer while our News Editor, James Ellingworth, won Best Features Writer. Additionally, ex-tv editor Jonathan Liew won Best Columnist last year at the Guardian Media Awards - the UK's top awards for student journalism.

This year Student celebrated another successful year in the Guardian student media awards, with four nominations. Ex-editor Liz Rawlings was nominated for student reporter of the year, and Ian Massie was nominated for student columnist of the year.

Additionally, James Robertson won student photographer of the year and Fern Brady came runner-up in the critic of the year category.

The newspaper is published every Tuesday. It has a physical circulation of 8000 copies per issue and is read by some 30,000 people in Edinburgh.

Many of Student's former writers have gone on to become internationally renowned journalists and politicians. Past staff members of The Student include the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown: Lord Steel; the late Robin Cook; and many of Fleet Street's reporters and editors. Recent graduates include Guardian staff writer and editor Helen Pidd and BBC radio reporter Chris Page.
