To anyone who has not watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I pity you. One of my favourite comedy series of all time, this is a show that puts a smile on my face on even the glummest of days.
It is a sitcom set in a police precinct in Brooklyn where not all that much policing goes on. Sure, the macro-plot lines tend to follow crime cases, but the micro events and conversations revolve around the personal lives of a select bunch of New York cops, all very different, but all very loveable . The show was created in 2013 by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, and has been extremely successful so far, winning both a Golden Globe Award and a Creative Arts Emmy. With its previous success, it was delightful yet unsurprising when in May last year, the show announced it would return for a fifth season.
Although no episodes from Season Five have been aired on British television so far, across the pond they have been lucky enough to enjoy eleven whole episodes. That gives us approximately four hours in total of the fifth season to judge, and it’s safe to say that the producers and script writers are yet to run out of quality content.
So far this season we have seen awkward family gatherings, relationships blossom and break, thrilling crime scenes and just a smidgen of blackmail. It’s been a gripping ride that, just like the previous four seasons, has made me laugh, cry and even led me to consider dropping out of university to join the NYPD.
The mid-season finale aired on December 12, leaving all viewers hanging from a particularly frustrating cliff. With no fixed date of return, myself and fellow Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans have had plenty of time to ruminate where the plot might go from here. There’s an uncertainty regarding whether the fifth season will finish with all of our favourite characters still safe and sound. Despite all the worries, there’s also an awful lot to look forward to, so let’s just say we may hear some wedding bells ringing later in the series – no spoiling who for though.
Through it’s modern hilarity, loveable characters and innovative storylines, Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues to be a winning show. Whilst I hope and pray all characters continue to live happy and healthy lives, I am also eager and excited to see just where the show will go next. I put my faith in the actors, the script writers, but most of all Andy Samberg to deliver this show to the next level.
