Teaching staff at Scottish universities who were planning to withold exam marks as part of industrial action have withdrawn their threat. Lecturers from the teaching union the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) employed by Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of the West of Scotaland had voted on 16 May in favour of the move as a protest over job security, but the threat was rescinded yesterday afternoon after a vote to suspend the action was passed. GCU pro Vice Chancellor for learning and teaching Professor Mike Mannion told students: “I am delighted to inform you that, the teaching trade union, the Educational Institute of Scotland, have voted overwhelmingly to suspend action short of strike. The impact of this decision is that all GCU students' examination results will be marked and passed on to the relevant Trimester B Assessment Boards.”Earlier in the week students at both Glasgow Caledonian and UWS received emails advising them that exam markers may decide not to pass marks on to exam boards. The students were also informed that their final marks would be calculated without counting recent exams and coursework. GCU Students Association President Rory Herron had previously described the action as having a potentially "damaging impact on students" and expressed dismay at EIS's action, despite saying he supported their aims: "while GCUSA are very sympathetic to lecturers’ aims to protect their job security, we cannot support their methods.
