Academic services convenor Hugh Murdoch explains the role of the Student Council
News

The University of Edinburgh’s Student Council was founded to campaign on behalf of students on issues that students care about.

It does this through discussing motions which, if passed, become policy of the Student Council and through running campaigns (such as to get more study space in the library or extend the exam diet).

108 elected representatives sit on Student Council and the vast majority of these are school reps who are elected to represent their specific school.

The remaining reps are elected by cross-campus ballot and tend to hold roles with specific remits (such as external, academic services, etc.)

There is also a President and three Vice-Presidents who take a year out of their studies to work full-time representing students.
