| Student anger at Japanese dolphin killing |

Around 30 student protestors held a demonstration last week against the slaughter of dolphins and whales by Japanese hunters. The protestors, from the SaveJapanDolphins campaign group, gathered on Thursday afternoon outside the Japanese consulate on Melville Crescent in the New Town. The annual Japanese dolphin slaughter was recently featured in the popular documentary film "The Cove". A number of protests were held at Japanese diplomatic missions around the world. The activists said that they were trying to "send a message", as Japanese diplomats are required to report all protests to the government.
The Japanese claim that hunting whales is a part of their cultural history, which is true," a statement released by the group said.
Centuries ago people did hunt whales but it took place around their own coastal waters and in very small numbers. It didn’t take place some 12,000kms away from their country, in what is and has been declared an ocean sanctuary." Newer news items:
