'Taliban rule' at London university

Islamist extremists at a British university imposed a Taliban-style" culture of intimidation upon staff and students, according to a confidential report leaked last week.

According to the report, members of the 180-strong Islamic society at City University London engaged in "sub-criminal extremism", promoting unprovoked attacks on other Muslims and making threats against Jewish and gay students.

City University’s Islamic Society favoured the stoning of adulterers and forced female students to wear the hijab.

They also invited extremist speakers and attempted to invite others who had been banned from speaking in Britain.

Vice-chancellors from around 90 universities in England and Wales were given copies of the report on the radicalisation of Muslim students at British universities.

The report was compiled by the Quilliam Foundation, a think tank partly funded by the Home Office.

After the university's student newspaper, Felix, ran an article about the extremist speakers, its website was hit with a torrent of abusive messages aimed at reporter Gemma Meredith. The messages said that Meredith would "burn in hell" and "eat pus for eternity".

The university authorities were eventually forced to take action, shutting down the Islamic Society’s website in May and removing many of its privileges. Some of these privileges have since been restored.

City's deputy vice-chancellor, Julius Weinberg, said that he was now "confident that relations with the Islamic society had returned to normal," although he recognised that some of the group's previous leadership remained in place.

Last year, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a former president of the University College London Islamic Society, was arrested after allegedly attempting to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day.

Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian citizen, is currently standing trial in Detroit.
