| Academic year to be reviewed |

THE UNIVERSITY of Edinburgh is currently reviewing the structure of the academic year. The move follows representations from staff and students that highlighted concerns about the levels of teaching and revision time students currently receive.
Vice-President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) Guy Bromley told Student that the review “presents a great opportunity for an improved academic experience for students. It’s clear the current semester system isn’t providing us with value for money.” Teaching time is one of the key concerns of the review, with students at the University of Edinburgh reportedly receiving fewer teaching weeks than students at other universities. Also highlighted is revision time, with the students’ association arguing for a full revision week after the end of teaching to give students time to prepare for exams. Those concerned about the impact squeezing in these extra weeks will have on Freshers Week will welcome this comment from the VPAA: “We have one definite red line though – a full week for Freshers Week, which in other universities is being increasingly cut down to three days or less.” The review is still in consultation stages and any changes will not come into effect until around 2011. The group is due to report to the University Senate on the 22nd of October with outline proposals which will be subject to debate. Newer news items:
