04:00am - Adjundications beginning in Edinburgh West for contested ballots, results undoubtedly close. 03:33am - Some news from the rest of Scotland; both the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott and Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray have held onto their seats. Gray's was especially close, the difference between him and his SNP rival coming down to about 200 votes. 03:30am - Most constituencies in counting lull. Waiting for official annnouncements and or recounts, which are likely in Edinburgh Northern, Southern and Western 03:12am - More words from Mike Pringle, who, ever the optimist, has told the Guardian's local blogger that if he loses he'll retire and "do some gardening". 02:55am - Labour and Liberal Democrat sources say that SNP majority in Edinburgh Central could be anything between 600-1000 votes. It's all heating up! 02:43am - Mike Pringle, Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh Southern, has said that he doubts the student vote made a difference in his constituency, because his team has found while canvassing that many students in Marchmont and surrounding area are unregistered. He adds that the Liberal Democrats had hoped for three seats "not none" and lamented that Margaret Smith, Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh Western had lost. Pringle added "tonight is all about the SNP." 02:36am - Iain Gray has told the BBC that he won't be resigning: "No. I'm the elected leader of the Labour party [in Scotland]. We need to look at what the election result is and work out how we are going to carry on from here." 02:22am - Just spoken to local Councillor Cammy Day, for Edinburgh North & Leith. He told The Student: "It's looking like we'll scrape through there [his ward] and we've saved that seat so I'm quite pleased there". He says "there's been a swing across Scotland towards the SNP, and although people have gone against the Lib Dems, unexpectadly that vote has gone to the SNP. Which is not good for Labour; we need to rethink what we do now and what we do in the future." 02:04am - Lots more rumours, now hearing that Labour will hold onto Edinburgh North and Leith, and Liberal Democrats possibly have Edinburgh Western. Also hearing that Edinburgh Southern is now between Labour and SNP. 01:58am - Robin Harper, MSP, and former Greens co-covenor, says that based on loose box figures, he expects the Greens to "do as well if not better than any time in the last 25 years" in all of their top wards, including Edinburgh South. He also said he expects Green candidate Alison Johnstone to win a seat. 01: 50am - Marco Biagi, the SNP candidate for Edinburgh Central, says he's "quietly confident" about the result. He told The Student that, whilst reluctant to comment on the impressive results the SNP are getting tonight, "before the numbers are out... it's looking very interesting certainly", he's "delighted with the East Kilbride result" and hopes that she [Linda Fabiani] won't be the only Italian-Scottish SNP MSP by the end of the night. 01:32am - Rumours from SNP box sampling are that SNP have lead in Edinburgh Southern. 01:25am - Lots of rumours flying around on this end about SNP gains, though no official numbers yet. 01:13am - Counting is still underway here at Ingliston and much of the media, is, well, standing (or sitting) around.
00:59am - Liberal Democrat source has told The Student that if Mike Pringle loses Edinburgh South and Alex Cole-Hamilton wins Central, they are likely to get a list seat, depending on whether the list vote has "imploded". 00:22am - Sources tell us that the Liberal Democrat vote in Edinburgh South has 'imploded', and that the race there is now exclusively between Labour and the SNP. 00:10am - Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh Central, Alex Cole-Hamilton, has told The Student he is feeling confident after a day where the Lib Dem vote has remained "rock solid." The seat is currently held by Labour's Sarah Boyack, and many expect her to hold the seat; however Cole-Hamilton says that he feels there is no reason not to be optimistic. He also expressed his disappointment at Boyack's leaflet this week that personally attacked him, but said the fact that Labour were turning their fire on him was a sort of comfort as he seeks to overturn Labour's narrow majority. 11:44pm·- We've just arrived at Highland Hall, where the vote count is taking place; Iain Dale, former editor of The Scotsman and Daily Mail columnist is tweeting some speculation about results: Extraordinary. Hearing well-informed predictions of SNP at 58 seats, Lab 40, Tories 14, Greens 8, LDs 7, Margo 1 and Galloway 1 #sp11 ... 9:07pm - There is less than an hour until the polls close. 4:28pm - The Edinburgh Greens are optimistic about their chances with second votes:
4:13pm- As voting in Edinburgh continues, the Council has confirmed that·parliamentary results are not likely to be announced before 4am. The count tonight, which is to take place at Ingliston Highland Hall, is responsible for constituency counts. Vote counting·on the AV referendum will not take place until tomorrow afternoon. 2:50pm - Tonight's count will involve 1,200 staff - nearly double the number who counted votes during the last elections for Scottish Parliament. The increased staffing is part of an effort to ensure that problems that halted the counting in 2007 do not occur again. Returning officer Sue Bruce told the Edinburgh Evening News: "There has been substantial planning gone into this election. We have very clear procedures and we've had extensive training - 45 sessions - for everyone involved. Counting of the votes from 407 polling stations around Edinburgh will begin at 10pm. 2:28pm - Response from students responding to The Student's Twitter/email poll on AV is decidedly yes - not that they're enthused about the campaign. One said he "couldn't care less", another that it was "a tough call". EUSA VPS Sam Hansford doesn't think AV will pass but wants to send a message that "we want change". 1:36pm - Reported concerns about how well advertised registration deadline was: "I don't know many students who bothered to register," says second year student Matthew Brown, who will be unable to vote after missing the registration deadline by a day "[Registration deadline was]Not well advertised at all." 1:22pm - Some students apparently confused about the location of the their polling place - check on your polling card (though you do not need this to vote) or call 01313442500.
