Raised by Wolves

Raised by Wolves is written by journalist Caitlin Moran and her sister Caroline. It is a re-creation of their chaotic adolescence in Wolverhampton, updated to the present day. Germaine (Helen Monks) and Aretha (Alexa Davies) embody the equivalents of the two writers; the latter is the deadpan, unimpressed foil to the former’s outspoken, lust-filled eccentric.

The first episode features a day out food-foraging, and Germaine’s preoccupation with a local yob.  The best character is the matriarch, Della (Rebekah Staton), with omnipresent cigarette and the best lines (example: “You have the posture of a victim. Sort it out.”).Unfortunately, as the Caitlin character, Germaine is not particularly endearing, and quite hard to watch at times. The belaboured ‘kookiness’ will not suit all tastes. It is nice, however, to see another unashamedly female-driven outfit. If you’re a fan of the Moran form of comedy, then this is probably worth your time.
