Be careful what you tweet for...
Sport

When I jumped on the bandwagon of the latest cyber-communication craze Twitter last year, at first I was dismayed.  Who on earth wants to know what I am doing at regular intervals? The answer, I gather from the three times I have tweeted so far with no reply, is nobody.

However, aside from proving that I myself am not worthy of cyber-stalking, Twitter does provide an abundance of whimsical storylines for the square-eyed journo to feast upon.

Luckily, for the purposes of this column, I almost exclusively follow sportspeople on Twitter. Apart from a certain President Obama, whom I stupidly followed as a Twitter novice, only to realise that, despite being the leader of one of the world’s only remaining superpowers, he has very little banter.

So onto the sportspeople we go. First up, Jack Wilshere:Arsenal’s young midfield prodigy.  Aside from being a phenomenally talented box-to-box midfielder, Wilshere is also, apparently, quite an angry young man.

Take his candid posts on referee Phil Dowd, after Newcastle’s incredible comeback from 0-4 down against Arsenal:  “Inconsistent refereeing needs to stop, it’s killing the game.”

Applauded for his maturity in the game against Barcelona at the Emirates, the Arsenal teenager may want to curtail his verbal diarrhoea in future, as the FA and UEFA may not be so understanding next time around.

Another Arsenal player is Wojciech Szczesny. The talented young goalkeeper jokingly tweeted after Ashley Cole’s missed penalty sent Chelsea out of the FA Cup: “Is it a plane? Is it an aeroplane? No, it’s just Ashley throwing Chelsea out of the FA cup :)” which he later corrected, “I meant bird obviously :)”.

It seems the Polish stopper suffered some bad karma after that tweet, as his mix-up with the chronic Laurent Koscielny gifted the Carling Cup to Birmingham. A safe pair of hands like Clark Kent’s may have come in handy in the closing moments at Wembley. These things work two ways Wojciech!

One man who does seem to understand the notion of karma is NBA star Lebron James. The Miami Heat forward tweeted after his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, received the mother of all drubbings at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers. “Crazy. Karma is a b****...Gets you every time. It’s not good to wish bad on anybody.”  You are absolutely right Lebron; it’s not good to wish bad on anyone. However, it’s easier to take the moral high ground if you haven’t abandoned your team of seven years in an ego-driven ESPN special live on national TV.

Take a lesson from the poor old Wojciech Szczesny, Lebron, and be careful what you Tweet for – a big old helping of ‘Twitter karma’ might just be headed your way.
