So, it's The Student's last issue of the academic year, and I thought I would sound off with a round-up of the best games that have trotted our way in the past twelve months. However, the BAFTA's already did that for me  a few days ago, so I thought I'd take the piss out of their selections instead.

Carving out a successful acting career in the games industry is a bit like trying to build a fortress out of soggy cornflakes. Sure, you get the odd big-name actor doing voice work such as Patrick Stewart's brief appearance as the doomed Emperor in Oblivion, or Lance Henriksen, whose gravely tones can be heard in Aliens vs Predator and Modern Warfare 2. But both were well-known actors well before they made forays into videogames.

Not since The Witcher in 2007 has there been a true fantasy epic, until BioWare’s Dragon Age: Origins towards the end of last year. The first ‘expansion’ to the dark and engrossing world of Ferelden has arrived just in time to harass essays and exam preparation.

Heavy RainThe Playstation, once an untouchable source of exclusive games, has suffered greatly from games developers’ obsessions with prostituting their newest title out to every console under the sun. Even the Playstation Old Guard, such as the once loyal Final Fantasy series, have fallen to the feet of Microsoft’s big box of tricks. Quantic Dream, whose latest offering is a Playstation exclusive, is clearly not your average developer then. This can only be a good thing, because Heavy Rain is not your average game.

I know, I know, we've used this headline before. For once though, it's not us who are well and truly extracting the Michael. For the past couple of weeks the games industry has been shooting itself in the foot (and the consumer in the face) with everyone's favourite anti-piracy measure, Digital Rights Management, or DRM.

At first glance, Sonic and SEGA All Stars seems like a bad proposition. With so many bad Sonic games in the last few years alone, it's hard to imagine a Mario Kart rip-off would offer anything but another quick cash-in for SEGA. Give enough monkeys enough time however, and you’ll get Shakespeare, or in this case, a Sonic game that doesn’t totally suck.
