Carry on Campus
TV

Channel  4 has got another first. From the creators of Green Wing comes Campus.

Ok, it might be Green Wing set in a University, but that’s probably the best idea ever.  Campus takes place at the fictional Kirke University, overseen by pure evil overlord Vice Chancellor Jonty De Wolfe (Andy Nyman).

In classic comedy fashion the university is staffed by all manner of wacky staff, including published author and maths lecturer Imogan Moffat (Lisa Jackson) and Jonathon Beer, the eternally horny English Professor.

The writing is sharp as mature cheddar, with surprisingly little cheese. The show is even more surreal than Green Wing, with De Wolfe possessing near god-like powers inexplicably and a total ignorance of political correctness – at one point running around a library in a dress.

The setting is totally reminiscent of any mid-twentieth century British University and the show cleverly plays upon everyone’s suspicions about higher education, whilst glittering them with unbelievably flippant dialogue to suspend belief.

The soundtrack is definitely Green Wing: dull, generic but curious sounds that lead into dialogue or character’s thoughts. The presentation is a little different though, the slow down and speed up is gone completely. The major difference between Campus and Green Wing is that the characters are all much more likable, even the ones you’re meant to hate, it seems to create even more endearment towards it.

The show’s characters are all pretty strong, and besides the stupid student athlete, generally avoid stereotypes and manage to build their own templates for successful characters.  The humour is, in the vein of most British shows of this nature, quite dry and highly obscene. Jonty De Wolfe looks a bit like David Brent, but he doesn’t act like him.

There, that was an attempt at criticism of this lovely lovely show, now just go and watch it.
