Website Design Philosophy

The develpoment and implementation of this site was managed and is maintained by Jack Schofield, Edinburgh University Student and Technical Director of Mad Cat Digital LLP.

The website uses the Joomla! open source content managment system. Joomla! is provided under a GNU/GPL licence and is supported by a community of web developers and experts.

The website makes use of the Apache web server and MYSQL database server. Both of these servers are provided free of charge under a GNU/GPL licence and are supported by a community of web developers and experts.

The website was developed, in part, on a computer using the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Nelson Mandela describes Ubuntu philosphy thus:

"A traveller through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not address themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve?"

It is with this philosophy in mind that this website has been developed and provided for Edinburgh University. Ubuntu is provided under a GNU/GPL licence and is supported by a community of software developers and experts.

Ubuntu is often used on cheap computers sent to the "third world" and without it, or linux distributions like it, such projects might not be possible. Joomla, Apache and MYSQL are favoured by NGO's and public organisations for the low cost of their implementation.

Please spread the word about these fantastic projects and support them if possible.

Thank you for visiting our site.

Regards,
Jack Schofield
